There are plenty of examples of successful games based off of the Royal Game of Ur. There are the games Sorry! and Trouble. Those have been large successes in the board game industry. These games have also been out for years. These games may have even been inspired off of the game of Ur. Think about how successful the game of Ur would be then.

But you would need to think about how it would be treated by the public that doesn't know the backstory of Ur. Would they consider Ur a ripoff of Trouble or Sorry!? It could be possible that people believe Ur as a small version of Sorry! that is just cheaper to produce. This is an example if the game of Ur is not successful because of the big companies thinking it is a variation of their games, and tried to sue whoever made the modern version of Ur.
However, a modern version could be a success. Some of the big companies may even contribute their success to their game being a remodel of it in a small article if questioned about it. The game of Ur also has all of the necessary things in it to make it a fun board game. It is competitive, and can cause someone to be frustrated by being sent back to start by example.
What do you think? Would a big retail version of the Royal Game of Ur be successful or a failure?
a complete flop times 2 the game is boring and dumb.

ReplyDeleteI don't think this game is dumb and boring I feel like compared to modern day games it might be slightly less entertaining but back in their days they focused on farming and work rather than playing games all day and yes it might not be the newest black ops three or stuff on that level but it was one of the very first games they may or may not have created the foundation for our favorite modern day video games.

DeleteI agree with Will, while Ur might not be much by today's standards, it was an important step in gaming history
DeleteEven though the game of ur is no video game people of the time liked it like we like our video games today and it is not a stupid game because you said so
Deletehow is sorry similar to sent
ReplyDelete*Senet and he was comparing it to Ur
DeleteThe game is similar to Ur because the point of both games is to get your pieces home and your pieces can get back to start.
DeleteThe game Ur would not work as a big retail game because its just like sorry and people would not want to play a game just like it. People want new and fresh ideas not old ones remade. That is why sequels of movies don't work out.
ReplyDeleteIf a modern game of ur was made I think people would think of it as a old game of sorry
ReplyDeleteI agree with this post because Ur could possibly have been the foundation for our board games however newer games use cards and dice for movement rather than stones. I also think that Ur would not be a successful game because it is no match for the fame that modern video games because as we advance board games become less and less fun compared to new virtual reality programs that exist in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI feel that a retail version of the game of Ur would not do very well. The game actually bad, it just gets outclassed by modern games. Most people also enjoy games with at least a bit of skill involved, and the royal game of Ur is 99% luck.
ReplyDeleteI agree if a board game would be successful today it will need to be skill based and have strategies other than rolling a dice and hoping for a certain number.

DeleteI disagree with you because for one I like the game, you never know it could outshine the others, and its not all luck because you have to chose on which pieces you move and the way you move them could determine the game all together.
DeleteI think the game of ur will be a failure because many people don't know about it and people today are more interested into video games.

ReplyDeleteI feel that a new version of the game would work out alright it just wouldn't appeal to everybody. Some people would enjoy it though i think
ReplyDeleteI don't think it would be a good idea. I think that the game would become popular, but also anger bigger companies. Society nowadays hates someone even slightly copying them,so I feel like if someone made a modern version of Ur,they'd get sued.
ReplyDeletei agree with you because big shot companies cant stand if something not as popular to there game kinda copies it
DeleteI feel like a retail version of the game of ur would flop in todays standards. Considering the fact that there are so many more complex games around today, it is likely that someone would choose something a bit more entertaining than the game of UR. If you had to choose between a simple game like Ur and a more complex game like sorry, more people would go for the game sorry.

ReplyDeleteI feel this game wouldnt sell that well this day and age there'ś a lot more variety in the game world that would be more fun then ur I dont think people would even give it a chance
ReplyDeleteWhether or not it could sell well depends entirely on the publisher's marketing prowess, therefore I can only base my answer on the factor of whether or not the game is fun to play. My personal preferences does not favor Ur due to the lack of decisions that can be made and the dependence on an uncontrollable luck element.
ReplyDeleteit would not sell well only because theres to much stuff now a day for instance why chess isnt selling well now because i would rather play black ops 2

ReplyDeleteI believe Ur could be a success if it was marketed right. People would obviously think that it was an "off-brand" of Sorry!. But if the game was marketed correctly then people may buy it. If people bought it then some gamers that are passionate would get into it and learn the history. Once, one person learned the history it would spread and eventually consumers would realize that Ur is the original Sorry! and it would gain more popularity.

ReplyDeleteI think Ur would be a success, because other games originated from the idea and/or similar, not only that but popular games are like it so it would get attention.
ReplyDeleteIts an interesting idea that the modern world would just think of Ur as a ripoff of other games, and I think its a valid point. If people actually knew that it came before all the modern games, and that it is truly the classic, they would buy it to seem like they knew about it before it was cool. But I would buy it just to be able to have it and available to play.
ReplyDeleteYes, but would you be willing to pay for something you could easily create with materials in your home?
Deletebored games are very fun and competitive. They are almost as fun and competitive as Halo.
